The Director General of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Mr. Abdi Ali Mahdi, together with the Director Generals of the Ministries of Health and Education, on Wednesday 11th February 2026, officially closed a four-day workshop organized by the Ministry in partnership with UNICEF.
The workshop focused on the growing impact of climate change on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in Somaliland and explored strategies to build more resilient and adaptive WASH systems.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mrs. Erena, Head of UNICEF’s Water Section, highlighted the critical importance of sustained collaboration between the government—particularly the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change—and UNICEF to design and implement effective, evidence-based programs that protect communities from escalating climate risks.
The event laid important groundwork for the development of reliable, data-driven national plans and programs that align Somaliland’s priorities with global climate and development agendas, with special emphasis on safeguarding children and other vulnerable groups.
The workshop represents a significant step forward in strengthening economic infrastructure and increasing the overall resilience of Somaliland communities in the face of intensifying climate change.
