The Deputy Mayor of Hargeisa, Mr. Khadar Ahmed Omer, has reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to the modernization and beautification of the second phase of the Silanyo National Library, a national landmark named after the late former President of Somaliland H.E. Ahmed Silanyo.

During an official visit to the library on Sunday, Deputy Mayor Khadar met with prominent figures including Ahmed Dahir and former Somaliland Ambassador Bashe Awil Omar. The delegation was warmly received, underscoring the library’s significance as a shared national treasure.
Speaking at the site, Mr. Khadar described the Silanyo National Library as “a national asset that belongs to all Somalilanders,” emphasizing its role as a symbol of knowledge, culture, and public unity.
He paid tribute to the late President Ahmed Silanyo, praying for Allah’s mercy and paradise upon him, and praised his enduring legacy, which includes founding the library, establishing Koran Radio, and constructing the Erigavo road, among others.”
We are here today for the second phase of this historic institution,” the Deputy Mayor declared. “As the local government, we are fully prepared to contribute to its modernization and beautification. Whatever is needed, we are ready.”
A key focus of the initiative will be improving accessibility. Mr. Khadar announced plans to widen and upgrade the four main access roads surrounding the library, in collaboration with the chairman of the 26 June District and the director of markets and real estate.”
These roads are currently narrow and pose a challenge,” he noted. “We will open them, pave them, install lighting, and beautify them—so that this library becomes a welcoming gathering place for the people of Hargeisa.”
The Deputy Mayor called on both the central government and the public to join hands in the project, stating: “The President and the government will do their part, and the people of Hargeisa will do theirs. Together, we will make this library a source of pride for our capital and our nation.”
The Silanyo National Library, already a vital educational and cultural hub, is poised to undergo significant upgrades that will enhance its facilities and transform it into a modern center for learning and community engagement.
Local residents have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a continuation of former President Silanyo’s vision for education and development in Somaliland.
