Somaliland Government Ready for Any Path to Secure Release of Las Anod Prisoners, Says Defense Minister

The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Mohamed Yusuf Ali has reaffirmed the government’s full commitment to securing the release of Somaliland prisoners currently detained in Las Anod, stating that the administration is prepared to pursue “any viable path” to bring them home.

Speaking today before the Standing Committee of the House of Elders (Guurti), Minister Mohamed Yusuf assured lawmakers that the government remains in complete control of the situation.

“Whatever path is taken to release the Las Anod prisoners, the Government is ready,” he declared, adding, “We are fully aware of our prisoners’ living conditions and well-being, and their release remains firmly in the government’s hands.”

During the same session, Minister Mohamed presented a comprehensive 11-month progress report on the Ministry of Defense, highlighting significant milestones achieved under his leadership:

Formal integration of previously civilian militias into the National Armed Forces;

Near-completion of a nationwide registration drive for all military personnel;

Upcoming launch of registration for retired soldiers and disabled veterans;

Major investments in equipment, training facilities, infrastructure, and strengthened international military cooperation, particularly with neighboring countries and strategic partners.

Lawmakers welcomed the report, praising the ministry’s efforts to modernize and professionalize Somaliland’s armed forces while maintaining focus on the welfare of detained personnel.

The Somaliland government continues to prioritize diplomatic and security channels to ensure the safe return of all prisoners, with officials expressing optimism that a resolution will be reached soon.
