The Ministry of Energy and Minerals of the Republic of Somaliland announced today a reduction in electricity prices across all cities in the country, a major step to ease the cost-of-living burden on citizens.
According to the new decision issued by the Minister of Energy and Minerals, Eng. Ahmed Jama Bare, electricity prices in Somaliland cities will now be 0.59 cents per unit, while the city of Berbera will enjoy an even lower rate of 0.20 cents per unit.
This new policy will take effect on December 1, 2025, and is part of the election campaign promises made by the President of the Republic of Somaliland, His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, who pledged to the public that he would reduce energy costs and ensure affordable and reliable electricity services.
The Ministry of Energy and Minerals stated that this move is a strategic initiative aimed at:
Boosting economic growth
Supporting industries
Improving the daily lives of citizens
They also affirmed their commitment to ongoing plans to expand access to affordable and sustainable energy.
The people of Somaliland have warmly welcomed the government’s electricity price cut.
For example, in the capital Hargeisa, where the current rate is 0.79 cents, it will drop to the new rate of 0.59 cents starting December 2025, as set by the government.This step is part of the Ministry’s broader effort to ensure the nation has cheap, reliable, and trustworthy electricity.
