The Somaliland Police Force has issued a strong warning to groups of youth in Hargeisa accused of harassing Ethiopian residents in the capital’s markets, as tensions rise over recent incidents targeting foreigners.

Colonel Abdiqani Sheikh Ismail, the police spokesperson, condemned the actions as “illegal” during a press briefing, vowing that law enforcement will take swift legal action against those responsible for creating unrest.

“The Somaliland police will not tolerate any behavior that disrupts the peace or threatens the safety of our communities,” he stated.

The incidents, which have occurred over the past week, involve groups of young individuals allegedly intimidating and causing trouble for Ethiopian nationals living in Hargeisa. Colonel Abdiqani emphasized the deep historical and neighborly ties between Somaliland and Ethiopia, noting that many Somalilanders reside peacefully in Ethiopia without facing similar hostility.

“Somaliland and Ethiopia are brothers. There is no enmity between us, only strong bonds of friendship,” he said.

The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining law and order. Colonel Abdiqani called on Somaliland’s youth to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, warning that offenders will face strict consequences.

Local community leaders have echoed the police’s call for unity, urging residents to foster peace and mutual respect. The Somaliland government has also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all residents, regardless of nationality, as part of its broader efforts to ensure stability in the region.

Authorities are now increasing patrols in key market areas and engaging with community groups to prevent further incidents.

The members of the public are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement to preserve Hargeisa’s reputation as a safe and welcoming city.
