In a positive development for Somaliland’s long-standing quest for international recognition, Foreign Minister Hon. Abdirahman Dahir Adan has expressed appreciation for U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest comments indicating that the United States is evaluating the possibility of recognizing Somaliland as an independent state.
In a statement on his X account, Minister Adan stated, “We appreciate President Donald J. Trump’s statement, ‘We’re looking into that right now,’ acknowledging the issue’s complexity.”
Minister Adan emphasized Somaliland’s commitment to democratic principles and peaceful governance, noting, “Somaliland remains a peaceful, democratic nation committed to lawful, voluntary humanitarian engagement.”
He reaffirmed Somaliland’s “respect for international norms and readiness to engage in dialogues respecting its sovereignty and democratic values. ”
He noted, “Our foreign policy respects international norms, and any discussions with partners, including the U.S., will uphold our sovereignty, democratic values, and pursuit of formal recognition,”
Highlighting its strategic importance, the Foreign Minister described Somaliland as “a stable and strategic nation in the Horn of Africa.”
He expressed optimism about the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships, stating, “We welcome respectful, mutually beneficial dialogue that advances peace, prosperity, and lasting stability in the Horn of Africa and beyond.”
This response comes amidst growing international interest in Somaliland, driven by its relative stability and democratic governance compared to Somalia. U.S. recognition could mark a significant milestone for Somaliland, potentially fostering greater economic opportunities and international cooperation.
