Dahabshiil Group and its telecommunications subsidiary, Somtel, have committed $200,000 to support drought-affected communities in Somaliland’s Awdal region, one of the areas most severely impacted by the ongoing drought in the Horn of Africa.

The donation, announced on August 8, 2025, will fund emergency supplies, including food, water, and other essentials, as part of a broader humanitarian effort to address the crisis. The Awdal region is grappling with dire conditions, including dried grazing lands, depleted water wells, and significant livestock losses, forcing many families to displace in search of basic necessities.

Dahabshiil and Somtel are among the first private sector entities to respond directly to Somaliland’s drought emergency appeal, setting a precedent for corporate involvement in humanitarian crises.

Abdirashid Duale, CEO of Dahabshiil Group, underscored the private sector’s responsibility, stating, “We are deeply concerned about the suffering in Awdal. This donation reflects our commitment to supporting our communities in times of need.” Dahabshiil, a leading remittance and financial services provider operating in over 140 countries, and Somtel, a key player in regional connectivity, have a long history of supporting education, healthcare, and disaster relief across Somali-speaking populations.

The donation comes amid a national state of emergency declared by Somaliland government and appointed National Committee heads VP, as the nation faces one of its worst droughts in decades, exacerbated by consecutive failed rainy seasons and climate change.

Dahabshiil and Somtel have called on other businesses and the Somali diaspora to join the relief efforts. This initiative aligns with ongoing national and international responses, including government-led programs and partnerships with aid agencies, to mitigate the crisis and prevent further deterioration in Awdal and beyond.
