In a significant step toward enhancing Somaliland’s diplomatic and agricultural engagements, the Minister of Agriculture Development of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Mohamoud Egeh Yousuf, led a high-level delegation to the Somaliland Diplomatic Mission in Nairobi.
The delegation, which included officials from the Somaliland Food Security and Resilience Project (SL-FSRP), a World Bank-supported initiative, was warmly received by Somaliland’s Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, Ambassador Sharmake Gelle.
The visit, part of a series of official engagements in Kenya, underscores Somaliland’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and advancing its agricultural development agenda.
During their time at the embassy, the delegation was briefed by Ambassador Gelle on the mission’s ongoing efforts to support the Somaliland diaspora in Kenya and promote the nation’s interests abroad.
“The Somaliland Diplomatic Mission in Nairobi plays a vital role in representing our people and our nation,” said Minister Yousuf. “This visit has allowed us to explore new avenues for collaboration, particularly in agriculture and food security, which are critical to Somaliland’s development.”
The SL-FSRP team, tasked with coordinating efforts to bolster food security through sustainable agricultural practices, discussed potential synergies with Kenyan counterparts, leveraging Kenya’s expertise in agriculture to benefit Somaliland’s growing sector.
The World Bank-backed project aims to enhance resilience and productivity in Somaliland’s agricultural systems, addressing challenges posed by climate change and global food supply disruptions.
Ambassador Gelle highlighted the embassy’s multifaceted role, stating, “Our mission is to serve as a bridge between Somaliland and the international community, ensuring that our citizens in Kenya receive the support they need while promoting Somaliland’s vision on the global stage.”
The delegation’s visit comes at a time when Somaliland is intensifying efforts to gain international recognition and strengthen bilateral ties with regional partners. The engagement in Nairobi signals Somaliland’s proactive approach to diplomacy and development, with agriculture as a cornerstone of its economic strategy.
