Somaliland Customs Chief Leads World Bank Delegation in Berbera Inspection

A high-level delegation, headed by Abdirahman Ismail (Irro), Director of the Customs Department, alongside World Bank technical experts and officials from the Customs Department and the SERP project, conducted a pivotal working visit to Berbera Customs, Somaliland’s largest and busiest port.
The delegation’s mission was to evaluate the operational efficiency and electronic systems at Berbera Customs, with a focus on identifying critical areas for development to bolster its capacity. The visit underscores Berbera’s vital role in driving Somaliland’s economy, serving as a key hub for trade and revenue generation.
During the tour, the group inspected various sections of the facility and received detailed briefings from Berbera Customs Manager Ahmed Abdirahman Hariir and other officials. Discussions highlighted opportunities to enhance service delivery, strengthen digital infrastructure, and boost customs revenue, aligning with national goals of improving transparency and efficiency.
World Bank representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Somaliland’s customs modernization, pledging assistance through training programs, advanced equipment, and improved administrative systems. “Berbera Customs is a cornerstone of Somaliland’s economic framework, and we are eager to collaborate on its growth,” World Bank representatives noted.
This inspection marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to overhaul Somaliland’s customs framework, aiming to streamline operations, enhance transparency, and maximize government revenue.
