The city of Hargeisa and various regions across Somaliland today vibrantly celebrated the 34th anniversary of May 18, the day the Republic of Somaliland reclaimed its independence from Somalia.
The well-organized festivities in Hargeisa were attended by Republic of Somaliland’s President, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro, former President H.E. Muse Bihi Abdi, former leaders, various officials, diplomats, and delegations from countries friendly to Somaliland.
The event featured captivating performances showcasing the significance of May 18, with Somaliland’s various armed forces delivering a remarkable display in the public square.
This year, Somaliland highlighted its military strength by showcasing its armed forces and military equipment. Local industries and districts of the capital also exhibited their products and the progress they have made.
Somaliland’s diverse forces, including the military, commandos, police, coast guard, immigration department, and others, performed skillful military drills and showcased modern combat vehicles and other equipment in the square. The President received a salute from the forces during the event.
In a multifaceted speech, President Abdirahman Cirro extended congratulations and appreciation to Somaliland’s armed forces and its people for commemorating May 18.
“Today, the Republic of Somaliland has fulfilled every criterion expected of an independent nation,” the President stated, emphasizing that Somaliland deserves international recognition.
