The President of the Republic of Somaliland, His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro attended the inauguration of the Policy and Educational Curriculum for Somaliland Prisons on Thursday, which was prepared by the Ministry of Justice.
The curriculum for the Prisons was jointly developed by the Ministries of Justice, Education and Religious Affairs and Endowments.
The President, who delivered a speech on the occasion, emphasized that the step is a clear and symbolic proof of the Government of the Republic of Somaliland’s commitment to protecting human rights, reforming the country’s prisons, and facilitating the rehabilitation of convicted prisoners.
The President noted that it is the first time that a structured education system is being implemented within Somaliland’s prisons, ensuring that prisoners have access to educational opportunities that will enable them to become employable individuals upon their release from prison.
Speaking about the purpose of the Curriculum, the President said, “This curriculum provides prisoners with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills, which can help them integrate better into society upon their release from prison.”
He pointed out that the government is committed to protecting the rights of Somaliland citizens, developing skills and providing employment opportunities.
“Access to education is a fundamental right, and educational programs in prisons are being implemented to ensure this. Many people in prison do not have formal education or job skills. This program will provide basic education, vocational training, and moral education to increase their employment opportunities upon release from prison”, he said.
He stated that the launch of the Prison Policy and Curriculum is an important step in improving the country’s justice system, with real and tangible focus on prison reform and the rehabilitation of prisoners.
