By M.A. Egge

The Somaliland government has revoked the license to operate in the country from UNIVERSAL Television and forthwith banned it from operating within the country.

This is not the first time that the station has had its license revoked or its operations stopped in Somaliland for the same reason of undermining the essence and the sovereign nationhood of Somaliland.

The Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance who double as the official Spokesman for the Government, Hon. Ahmedyasin Sheikh Ali Ayaanle, said that Universal Television has violated the agreement between the proprietor of Universal TV and the Somaliland government, thus the Ministry of Information, Culture and National Guidance.

Somaliland businessmen have also sternly warned not to advertise or broadcast on Universal TV at all.

The minister has pointed out that Universal TV violated the sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland.

A statement from the office of the Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance, a copy of which was received by The Horn Tribune, reads as follows.

“I refer to the letter Ref: WWW/XW/76-10/2010, dated 21/10/2010, in which the Ministry of Information, Culture and National Guidance granted the license to operate within Somaliland to the television station named Universal TV.

  1. They have violated the terms of the agreement they entered into with the owner of Universal TV with the Republic of Somaliland government, especially the Ministry of Information, Culture and Guidance.
  2. They also have violated the sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland, which is non-negotiable and cannot be tolerated whatsoever.
  3. The reference to the last letter, with Ref: No. WWDH&W/X/W/377/06/2020 and dated 27/06/2020, and whose purpose was then a license revocation.

“Thus, starting today, which is 12th February, 2025, after seeing how Universal TV blatantly violates the sovereignty and existence of the Republic of Somaliland, we have revoked the media operational license in the Republic of Somaliland.

  1. All local television stations’ cable services providers, namely Astaan Tv, True Cable Tv, Hornsat Cable, are ordered to remove Universal TV from providing television services.
  2. All use of the Universal TV logo (Logo) has been prohibited.
  3. All commercial companies registered in the Republic of Somaliland have been prohibited to advertise on Universal TV.

“Therefore, I expect the adherence to the above directives”. END.
