The President of the Republic of Somaliland, His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), has established a powerful national institution that would be charged with the direly needed task of fostering cohesion and tranquility in the nation such that prosperity to greater level may be achieved.

The highly respected and renowned statesman, who happens to be the Senior Presidential Political Advisor, has been named to lead the just established national ‘Somaliland Peace Committee’ of seven-man team who will work to promote peace and national unity.

The executive order contained in Presidential Decree that established the institution with reference No. 01/012025.ccording to a press release by the Presidency, the decree is “in accordance with Articles 90 and 113 of the Constitution of Somaliland as well as Article 63, paragraph 3 of the Law on the Separation of Government and Independent Institutions, Law No. 71/2015, which states that the President of Somaliland, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, may establish independent institutions to be entrusted with specific tasks”.

It further noted, “The Somaliland Peace Committee, appointed by the President of the Republic of Somaliland, consists of seven members, namely, a Chairman, a Deputy Chairman and 5 other members.

“The Chairman, Deputy Chairman and other members of the Peace Committee are appointed and can be dismissed by the President of the Republic of Somaliland. The Committee may also have a Secretary and advisors responsible for the tasks they need to delegate.

“Abdilqadir Haji Ismail Jirde Chairman, Jama Ahmed Mohamed Odey Deputy Chairman, Hassan Ahmed Ibrahim (Embassy) Member, Ali Said Raygal Member, Mohamed Jama Abgaal, Member Shu’eyb Mohamed Muse Member, Mohamed Iid Dimbiil Member.

“The mandated duties and responsibilities of the Peace Committee of the Republic of Somaliland are to promote peace and unity in the Republic of Somaliland, facilitate peace talks and create forums and an environment for dialogue in order to strengthen peace and stability in society and prevent conflicts and conflicts in the regions of the Republic of Somaliland.

“The committee will also spearhead the government’s efforts in peacemaking, conflict resolution and reconciliation, holding and facilitating peacemaking meetings and negotiations between conflict-affected communities.

“The Somaliland Peace Committee will also determine measures to prevent, or resolve conflicts, as well as measures to establish and maintain lasting peace and stability in the Republic of Somaliland. It will also work to strengthen and support efforts to build social understanding and coexistence in order to encourage coexistence and build public awareness of cooperation and peace-building”. END.
