The President of the Republic of Somaliland, His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro, highlighted about the strengthening relationship between Somaliland and the United States; which is currently at a stage where the United States is warming up to the essence of the nationhood of Somaliland as the country’s most prominent politicians are calling on their president to look into the independence and recognition issue of Somaliland.
The Head of State highly commended the US Congressmen and the Foreign Affairs Committees of their parliament who have been demanding in recent weeks that their country open diplomatic offices in the country.
On the other hand, the President added that many governments are developing good and better relations, hence underscored the fact that the relations would practically be fruitful.
He expressed the sentiments in a multifaceted speech he delivered over the week at a luncheon ceremony he held for the senators, the GUURTI.
He said. “I would also like to mention our relationship with the United States, which is among the countries that are of particular interest to us”.
He continued, “We commend the American officials and the Foreign Affairs Committees of the House of Representatives for calling for the United States to open a diplomatic office in Somaliland, and we will take every step to further strengthen that relationship.
“We have good relations with many other governments, and I hope that they will bear fruit.”
The President said that they are working to further strengthen the relationship between Somaliland and Ethiopia, in the areas of security, stability, and the development of economic services.
He said. “I would like to mention Ethiopia, a close friend and neighbor which is indispensable to our economic development, strengthening security, our social stability, and our relations with the rest of Africa.
“It is our duty to improve this relationship and maximize the benefits it brings to both our nations.”
He pledged for good and better working relations with the senate for the betterment of the nation.
“The House of Elders, of which I am an honorary member, with its leadership, wisdom, and advice from experience, has played a significant role in building the foundation of our state, strengthening our values and culture, and ensuring our security”, he said.
He noted, “This important work that the House has done has earned it the trust of the nation, and the special role it has been given by our constitution, highlights the great importance of cooperation between the various departments of the government in order to strengthen the system of government and realize the aspirations of citizens”.
On the other hand, the President said that they will reform the security and defense institutions of the country, adding that he will independently appoint a committee in consultation with the Senate, which will work on security issues.
He said, “Inside the country, we have begun inspections related to our various forces in order to reform the security and defense institutions of the country. On the other hand, we are simultaneously pursuing efforts to stabilize eastern regions of the country, which are progressing well, and soon, as agreed by the Senate, we will independently appoint a committee responsible for peacemaking issues”.
He underpinned the fact that they are working as a government to unite solidarity for the general goal and vision of the nation, and urged that personal desires and interests be set aside.
He said. “Let us put aside our personal desires and interests aside, and unite for the general goal and vision of our nation, and as a government we will work towards it”.
