The Republic of Somaliland has succeeded in persuading the President of Uganda H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to mediate the conflict between Somaliland and Somalia, in order to return to the situation in 1960 when the Republic of Somaliland took its independence.

Dr. Jama Musse Jama, the President’s Adviser met with President H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and delivered a special message from the President of the Republic of Somaliland H.E. Muse Bihi Abdi and from the people of Somaliland.

A press release issued by the Presidency of Uganda said that President Museveni met with the Republic of Somaliland envoy at State House-Entebbe.

The statement of the Ugandan presidency said that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has agreed to mediate the conflict between Somaliland and Somalia, especially supporting their union.

Dr. Jama thanked President Museveni for his ongoing effort to the peace in Somalia and his willingness to promote dialogue and united wider East Africa community in development and economic growth and invited Ugandans to invest in Somaliland. Dr Jama Musse also thanked HE President Museveni for accepting the request for mediation but told him that the Republic of Somaliland case was not and is not for a cessation but restored its independence in accordance with its 1960 colonial borders.

Dr. Jama informed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni that “he recognizes the president’s call for Somalia and Somaliland dialogue but the Somaliland government position has been clear that it is not secessionist but rather restoring its independence in accordance to its 1960s colonial borders and rectifying the impact of an ill union that was never rectified and as such had no legally binding commitments in the emerged Somali Republic. It is urgent to find a way out for the sake of the entire Somali people and by extension the East African community.”

Similarly, President Museveni further agreed to trade with Somaliland saying that this would benefit the two economies.

“In case you have something that we don’t have, we shall buy from you, you can also buy from us what you don’t have if we have it,” President Museveni said.
