Swedish parties are said to be demanding the recognition of Somaliland through the parliament with two major parties in the country spearheading the effort.

Markus Wiechel, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Swedish Parliament recalled that nine years ago the first motion for the recognition of Somaliland was submitted to the parliament.

He posted a message on his Twitter account on Thursday saying that two parties in Sweden are pushing for the recognition of Somaliland.

He said, “Today is completely different. Two parties, the Sverigedemokraterna and the Christian Democrats, are pushing for recognition of Somalilnd, and the issue has been brought up jointly.”

MP Weichel was elected as the vice president of the Somaliland-Sweden friendship group and said that he had a meeting with Somaliland Ambassador Zakariye Waeys and Somaliland’s special envoy Mikael Torstensson.

“I am always happy to meet these two gentlemen. The chairman of the friendship group is Magnus Oscarsson from the Christian Democrats”, he noted.
