The Security Council has been called upon to find a long-term solution for the status and future of Somaliland, and to resolve the conflict in Las Anod through a ceasefire and dialogue.
This was contained in a report by Dr. Annette Weber, the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, while addressing a special private meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Somalia and Somaliland on Tuesday, March 27, 2023.
“While the international community (IC) is focusing on the fight against Al-Shabaab, there is still a conflict in the city of Las Anod. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands displaced.” said Dr Weber.
The European Union envoy proposed a ceasefire and negotiations to end the conflict and said, “I urge the parties to restore the ceasefire and engage in negotiations for a long-term solution that they are able to find.” humanitarian aid.
The European Union has called for a long-term solution for Somaliland, “This conflict is a symbol of the lack of support of some communities and the lack of a political solution to the status of Somaliland. The long-term solution has to be identified.”
The position of the European Union is expected to catalyze the efforts of the Republic of Somaliland to attain international recognition.
