Fahmi Kassem, Director of the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland, revealed that the Somaliland government announced that it had completely withdrawn from any future talks with Somalia, especially during the rule of former Somali President Abdullah Farmajo.

In exclusive statements to Al-Tariq, Mohamed confirmed that the new Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, is somewhat open to Somaliland, noting that it is possible to resume talks between the two parties in the future if Somaliland sees changes in some Somali positions.

The Director of the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland confirmed that Somaliland had an experience during his first term, as he met for the first time with the former President of Somaliland Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud Silanyo in Ankara and hosted by Turkish President Erdogan, where the two sides held their first talks in Turkey.

Qassem added, that during his first term in Somalia, there were preliminary agreements. Still, the fundamental difference was always the issue of separation and unity. These two issues were postponed until the two parties demonstrated flexibility in negotiation and the implementation of prior agreements, which formed the nucleus for the continuation of negotiations, and therefore all the agreements that were concluded With Somalia in custody that the Somali side did not implement and failed.

He explained that he differs greatly from the negotiations with his predecessor Abdullah Farmajo, who represented a major obstacle in the matter of negotiation, and who had a mistake in his calculation and was a lot of evasiveness during the negotiations.

Last month, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud won Somalia’s presidency for the second time in a long-awaited election in the troubled country in the Horn of Africa, which is facing an armed rebellion and the threat of famine.

After marathon elections in which 36 candidates competed, state television broadcast its facts live, as former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, in a vote of parliamentarians, received 165 votes, more than the number required to win against the outgoing president, Mohamed Abdullah Mohamed, known as “Farmajo”.
