Army Chief Shed Light on Progress Made

THT-The chief of Somaliland Army General Nuh Ismail Tani has spoken about the tremendous progress made by the armed forces of Somaliland over the past thee decades. General Tani was speaking during the celebration of 28th anniversary of the army. He highlighted the progress made by the army and the challenges they encounter on their work.

He said, “For sure, we have an army that is disciplined and capable of defending the country from any form of aggression. Our soldiers are well-trained in handling modern military gadgets.”

General Nuh gave a brief history of Somaliland army. He recalled that Somaliland Army was initially formed in 1914 they were known as the Camel Corps.  “The Camel Corps operated for 28 years before it was disbanded. Then The Somaliland Scouts was a Rayid military unit, a regiment, of the British Army. It was established after the liberation of British Somaliland from Italy in December 1941, and was operational until unification of Somaliland and Somalia. Lastly, Somaliland National army was established in 1994 ”, General Nuh said.

The general revealed that Somaliland Army was formed due to the menace caused by the ragtag militia wrecking havoc after the fall of the Siad Barre regime.

He said that the first Somaliland president H.E Abdirahman Tur failed to create a national army, and it was only after the second president came to power was the army established.

He said that the responsibility of the army to protect the country’s borders from incursions.

The General stated the importance of improving the knowledge capabilities of members of the armed forces. He revealed that the cadets have been trained in different countries.

He went on to praise the President for being the pillar of hope for the armed forces. Furthermore, he said the president had reached the highest rank in the military.
