Oceans Beyond Piracy Provides Funds to Upgrades Somaliland Coast Guards Facilities

The commander of Somaliland Coast Guards Admiral Mohamed Hussein Farah “Hiraane” and representatives of Golis Energy Company in on Saturday signed an agreement which for the installation of Solar power panels which will be used to power newly constructed structures and other facilities at the main Coast guard base located in in the port town of Berbera both the new structures and the Solar power equipment were donated by Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) , a privately funded and independent non-profit organization located in Colorado, USA.

Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) work is meant to develop a sustainable and long-term solution to maritime piracy in the Western Indian Ocean and Horn of Africa through supporting maritime stakeholders in their work to build security capacity, create economic opportunity and enhance maritime situational awareness in and around the waters off the Somali coast and in the wider Western Indian Ocean.

In 2013, the Somali Federal Government, Somaliland, and the Somali regions with the support of members of the International Community developed the Somali Maritime Resource and Security Strategy (SMRSS).

The SMRSS serves as the document that directs the future secure and sustainable development of the Somali maritime sector, including marine resource management. The SMRSS also has six corresponding thematic annexes which act as a roadmap for the implementation of the SMRSS.

The SMRSS provides the mechanism for the identification of specific needs in the areas of maritime law enforcement, maritime security, maritime safety, maritime response/recovery.

About Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP)

Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) is a project of the One Earth Future Foundation (link is external), a privately funded and independent non-profit organization located in Colorado, USA.

OBP was launched in 2010 with the intent to develop a response to maritime piracy through:

  • Mobilizing stakeholders from the maritime community
  • Developing public-private partnerships to promote long-term solutions at sea and ashore
  • Sustainable deterrence based on the rule of law
