Somaliland’s Minister of the Presidency, Khadar Hussein Abdi, has declared that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has provided the nation with the backing of a major global power, strengthening its security and deterring countries that, he said, have sought to undermine Somaliland’s sovereignty, peace, and independence.
Speaking on the significance of Somaliland’s growing relationship with Israel, the minister described the recognition as a strategic milestone that would deliver long-term political and security benefits for the Republic of Somaliland. He stressed that the recognition should be safeguarded and defended.
“Israel’s recognition has enabled Somaliland to gain the support of a major power that it can rely on. There will no longer be any individual or other countries rushing in to pressure us or leave us isolated. Therefore, Israel’s recognition will greatly benefit Somaliland in many ways,” Khadar Hussein Abdi said.
The minister further claimed that several powerful countries opposed to Somaliland’s existence had developed plans aimed at weakening our nation and destabilizing the peace and security it has maintained over the years.
According to Khadar, the conflicts that erupted in Somaliland’s eastern and western regions were not isolated or accidental incidents but were part of a broader strategy orchestrated by forces opposed to Somaliland’s statehood. He said the government had successfully confronted those challenges through peacebuilding initiatives that remain ongoing.
“The intention was to surround Somaliland from all sides, weaken it, and eventually force it to go to Mogadishu in a vulnerable position. What happened in the eastern and western regions was not a coincidence—it was a planned effort and part of strategies pursued by countries opposed to Somaliland’s existence,” the minister stated.
The remarks underscore the Somaliland government’s view that its diplomatic partnership with Israel has enhanced its geopolitical standing while reinforcing its efforts to preserve stability and advance its longstanding quest for international recognition.
Although Somaliland operates as a self-governing state with its own institutions, it continues to seek broader international recognition of its sovereignty. The government has increasingly highlighted strategic partnerships with foreign allies as central to strengthening its diplomatic position and national security.
