In a groundbreaking diplomatic milestone, Israel has become the first nation to officially recognize the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign and independent state. On December 26, 2025, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the decision during a historic phone call with Somaliland’s President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, emphasizing opportunities for immediate collaboration in agriculture, health, technology, and economic development.
This pioneering step celebrates Somaliland’s remarkable achievements: a stable democracy, peaceful self-governance since 1991, and a thriving society in the Horn of Africa committed to progress and international partnership.
Speaking on i24NEWS English’s Middle East Now with host Laura Cellier, Salma Sheikh, Chief Editor of The Somaliland Review Magazine, shared the overwhelming joy and optimism sweeping the nation:
“We just wanted—like, you know—we feel like, as Landers, it was a closed gate. It was a closed door. And the fact that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opened the door, we know that other leaders around the world will follow one by one, if not in groups.
We welcome also the contribution or the collaboration of the Indian government, and people in Somaliland are very open-minded, very helpful.
And we feel like—we know, actually—we are an asset to the world. We are peace-loving people, and for that reason, we know that we have a lot to offer to the world.
It’s a shame that for 34 years the world was not really paying much attention to the Republic of Somaliland, but nevertheless, it’s never too late. And now we’re hopeful the other countries will follow suit.
And thanks to Israel again.”
Salma Sheikh’s heartfelt words reflect the resilient and forward-looking spirit of Somalilanders, who see this recognition as a gateway to deeper global ties and shared prosperity.
With its proven track record of peace, democracy, and openness, Somaliland is poised to shine on the world stage. As momentum builds, it’s clear: it’s never too late for a new era of opportunity and cooperation!
