President Donald Trump on Saturday reignited his long-standing criticism of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), calling for her deportation in a post on Truth Social accompanied by a video of the congresswoman welcoming and calling ‘My President”, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Minneapolis.
“She should go back,” Trump wrote in the brief message.
The attached clip, recorded during a community event in Minneapolis, shows Omar addressing a Somali-speaking audience in their native language.
In the video, she refers to Somalia President Mohamud as “our president” and describes a close personal bond.“
“Tonight, I had the opportunity to welcome our president — the President of Somalia, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud — to Minneapolis today,” Omar says in the footage.
“The President and I have a special relationship. I call him Uncle, and he calls me his daughter… We are extremely happy that you are our president today.”She continues:
“For all the people gathered here (Minneapolis), Somalia is their home; we do not see it as a distant place. Somalia lives in our hearts, it is in our hearts every day, and we think about Somalia’s situation.”
Critics, including Trump, seized on the remarks as evidence of divided loyalty, arguing that Omar’s language undermines her oath of office to the United States.“
Congresswoman Ilhan’s statement strongly contradicts the duties and responsibilities sworn to her office,” sounds argument circulating among conservative commentators, “as she acknowledges the President of Somalia as her president and prioritizes him over her actual president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.”
Omar’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
No formal investigation has been announced by Congress or federal law enforcement into the congresswoman’s remarks. However, Trump’s renewed public attack is expected to intensify scrutiny of Omar’s political standing, particularly among Republican lawmakers and her constituents in Minnesota’s 5th District.
Omar, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress and a frequent target of Trump’s rhetoric, has faced similar deportation calls from the president in the past — most notably in 2019, when he told her and three other progressive congresswomen of color to “go back” to their countries.
The latest episode comes amid heightened political tensions following Trump’s return to the White House and signals an early test of Republican efforts to challenge Democratic incumbents on national loyalty and immigration issues.
Political analysts say the fallout could influence Omar’s 2026 reelection bid, though she has consistently won strong support in her heavily Democratic district.
The White House has not elaborated beyond the president’s Truth Social post.
