Somaliland Coast Guard Seizes 21 Illegal Fishing Boats in Major Crackdown

In a robust 48-hour operation, the Somaliland Coast Guard’s Second Base in Zeila city has confiscated 21 boats caught illegally fishing along the nation’s coastline.

The operation, aimed at safeguarding marine resources and ensuring maritime security, resulted in the detention of 101 individuals aboard the vessels.

Lieutenant General Omar Adil, Commander of the Coast Guard for the Awdal and Salal regions, confirmed that the seized boats belonged to both Somalia’s and Yemeni nationals engaged in unauthorized fishing activities.

“These vessels were operating illegally in our waters,” he stated, urging those involved in such practices to cease immediately. “We warn that failure to stop these illegal activities will lead to strict legal action, including the confiscation of their boats,” he added.

The operation reflects the Coast Guard’s ongoing commitment to protecting Somaliland’s marine resources and combating illegal activities such as piracy, wildlife trafficking, smuggling, and the illicit arms trade.

Under the leadership of Admiral Ahmed Hurre, the Coast Guard remains on high alert to secure the nation’s coastline.The Coast Guard has vowed to intensify efforts against organized crime and illegal fishing to preserve Somaliland’s maritime security and natural resources.
