MP Ahmed Abdi Ibrahim, Chairman of the Committee of Public Affairs, Technology, Transport & Housing, delivered a compelling statement celebrating the Republic of Somaliland’s remarkable progress, particularly the global ascent of Berbera Port. Urging the international community to recognize Somaliland’s distinct achievements, he called for an end to misleading narratives that conflate Somaliland’s successes with Somalia’s challenges.

Berbera Port’s Global Triumph

The World Bank’s port performance rankings highlight Berbera’s extraordinary rise:

– 2020: Ranked 245th globally.

– 2021: Jumped to 184th.

– 2022: Climbed to 144th.

– 2023: Soared to 103rd globally and 7th in Sub-Saharan Africa, as reported by TechLabari and confirmed by the World Bank.

In contrast, Mogadishu Port trails significantly:

– 2020: 260th globally.

– 2021: 259th.

– 2022: 221st.

– 2023: 176th.

These indisputable figures underscore Somaliland’s effective governance, stability, and forward-thinking vision.

Rejecting Misinformation

MP Ibrahim denounced efforts to undermine Somaliland’s achievements through fabricated claims. “Berbera’s success reflects Somaliland’s peaceful, democratic model—a stark contrast to Somalia’s challenges,” he stated. “The international community must acknowledge Somaliland’s distinct progress and reject distortions that falsely attribute our achievements to Somalia.”

Somaliland: A Beacon of Stability

Berbera Port’s rise mirrors Somaliland’s broader commitment to democracy, peace, and development. Unlike Somalia, Somaliland has built a thriving system that drives tangible results, positioning it as a model for regional stability and global trade. MP Ibrahim called on global partners to engage with Somaliland’s proven framework and support its contributions to Africa and beyond.

A Call for Recognition

“Berbera’s success is Africa’s success. Somaliland’s stability strengthens the world,” MP Ibrahim affirmed. “The facts are clear, and the time to recognize Somaliland’s sovereignty and achievements is now.”

Highlighting Somaliland’s historical independence—achieved before many recognized nations and prior to Somalia’s—the MP emphasized that the union between Somaliland and Somalia was never legally formalized, as confirmed by the African Union’s Fact-Finding Committee. He urged the Somaliland government and institutions to counter false narratives, particularly claims that misattribute Berbera Port’s progress to Somalia. The House of Representatives will thoroughly investigate recent reports of biased evaluations by S&P Global and the World Bank, which allegedly downplay Berbera’s achievements. MP Ibrahim called for a unified effort to ensure Somaliland’s distinct governance and sovereignty are globally acknowledged.
