Taiwan’s Somaliland Representative Office issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to deepening ties with Somaliland following the signing of a Coast Guard Cooperation Agreement on July 24, 2025. The agreement elevates the Taiwan-Somaliland partnership to a strategic level, establishing a “Non-Red” security platform to promote stability in the Gulf of Aden and advance a sustainable blue economy.

“Taiwan is proud to act as a facilitator, catalyst, and lever in safeguarding the shared interests of Taiwan, the United States, and Somaliland in the Horn of Africa,” the statement declared. It highlighted the partnership as a model for regional cooperation, rooted in shared democratic values and mutual goals for maritime security.

The statement also acknowledged the partnership’s origins in 2020, when the White House National Security Council, under President Trump’s first administration, praised the establishment of Taiwan-Somaliland relations. The opening of mutual representative offices that year laid the groundwork for today’s trilateral alignment with the United States, aimed at countering authoritarian influence in the Horn of Africa region.

Taiwan expressed support for Somaliland’s efforts to gain international recognition, noting that the partnership serves as a “template” for collaboration in the Horn of Africa. The Coast Guard Cooperation Agreement marks a significant step in strengthening regional stability and fostering cooperation among like-minded partners.
