The Republic of Somaliland government has expressed its profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Ghana following a devastating military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two prominent ministers, on Wednesday, August 06, 2025.
In a statement released early this morning by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland, conveyed its sympathies to President H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the bereaved families, and the entire Ghanaian nation. The crash, which occurred in Ghana’s Ashanti region, resulted in the deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment, Science and Technology Minister Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six other officials and crew members, including Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in this horrific incident,” said a statement for the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “On behalf of the people and the Republic of Somaliland government, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, the government of Ghana, and the Ghanaian people during this time of national mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
The international community has also rallied around Ghana, with leaders from Nigeria, Kenya, and other nations expressing sympathy. Somaliland’s outreach underscores its commitment to fostering regional cooperation.
As Ghana begins the process of investigating the cause of the crash, Somaliland has pledged its moral support, calling for strength and resilience in the face of this national tragedy. “We stand with Ghana in this hour of grief,” the statement concluded, “and pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of those lost.”
