The Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland, Mr. Mohamed Abdirahman, officially opened a pivotal workshop today to review and evaluate the Ministry’s action plan for the first half of 2025 (January–June). Organized by the Ministry’s Planning Department, the event underscores Somaliland’s commitment to advancing its diplomatic and international cooperation objectives amid ongoing regional and global challenges.
The workshop, held in Hargeisa, brought together key stakeholders, including ministry officials, diplomats, and policy experts, to assess the progress of Somaliland’s foreign policy initiatives. The agenda focused on evaluating the Ministry’s efforts to secure international recognition, strengthen bilateral ties, and promote regional stability in the Horn of Africa. Director General Abdirahman emphasized the importance of aligning Somaliland’s diplomatic strategies with its national interests, particularly in fostering economic partnerships and countering security threats such as terrorism and piracy.
“Somaliland remains steadfast in its pursuit of global recognition and meaningful international partnerships,” Abdirahman stated during his opening remarks. “This review allows us to reflect on our achievements, identify areas for improvement, and chart a clear path forward for the remainder of 2025.”
Key highlights from the first half of 2025 included Somaliland’s diplomatic engagements with nations like the United States, where high-level consultations in Washington, D.C., in May strengthened bilateral ties. Additionally, President H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro’s participation in the World Government Summit in Dubai in February showcased Somaliland’s growing diplomatic presence.
Looking ahead, the Ministry aims to bolster economic cooperation through initiatives led by the International Cooperation and Economic Affairs Department (ICEAD), focusing on trade facilitation, investment opportunities, and diaspora engagement. The action plan for the second half of 2025 will prioritize expanding Somaliland’s representative offices abroad and leveraging its strategic location on the Gulf of Aden to attract foreign investment.
The workshop concluded with a call for continued collaboration across government sectors to ensure Somaliland’s foreign policy aligns with its vision of becoming a recognized, democratic, and economically integrated state.
