In a strong rebuke of claims that Somalia’s Federal Government is aiding drought-stricken regions of Awdal and Salel, Mohamed Farah Abdi, Director of the Somaliland Roads Authority, declared that Somalia has no authority or role in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Somaliland’s western regions. Speaking to local media, Abdi emphasized Somaliland’s sovereignty and capability to manage its own affairs, dismissing external narratives as misleading and politically motivated.

“Somalia has nothing to do with us, and it brings nothing to Somaliland. Awdal has its own government,” Abdi stated, addressing questions about alleged federal aid efforts. “The Federal Government of Somalia does not govern here, nor does it have any reach. Somaliland has distinct borders, and Awdal is part of the Republic of Somaliland, with its own government and ministers tasked with addressing the drought.”

As the drought continues to strain resources, Somaliland’s National Disaster Preparedness and Food Reserve Authority (NADFOR) has called for increased support from international partners to complement local efforts. The government’s focus remains on sustainable solutions, such as community-led agricultural initiatives in Burco, which aim to combat food insecurity and climate change.

Abdi concluded his remarks with a call for unity and trust in Somaliland’s institutions. “We have a government, we have borders, and we have the will to address our challenges. Somalia’s involvement is neither needed nor welcome in Awdal.”
