Somaliland’s Minister of Agriculture Development, Mahmoud Egeh Yusuf, led a high-level delegation to Nairobi, Kenya, for a pivotal meeting with World Bank officials to advance the nation’s food security agenda.

The delegation met with Mr. Hideki Matsunaga, Head of the World Bank Kenya Office, and Ms. Jeehye Kim, Senior Project Manager of the Food Systems Resilience Program (FSRP), on Thursday to discuss the ongoing SL-FSRP project, a critical initiative supported by the World Bank to bolster Somaliland’s agricultural resilience.

The meeting, attended by key figures including SL-FSRP Project Coordinator Kayse Ahmed Mohamed (Jelle) and Ibrahim Omar, Director of the Planning Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, underscored Somaliland’s commitment to enhancing food security through strategic partnerships. Both parties agreed to expedite the implementation of the SL-FSRP, a collaborative effort led by Somaliland’s Ministry of Agriculture, alongside the Ministries of Livestock and Environment and Rural Development.

The SL-FSRP aims to strengthen Somaliland’s food systems by improving agricultural productivity and sustainability, addressing challenges posed by climate variability and economic constraints. This meeting marks a significant step toward deepening cooperation between Somaliland and the World Bank, ensuring the project’s success in delivering tangible benefits to local communities.

Minister Mahmoud emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “The SL-FSRP is vital for securing Somaliland’s agricultural future, and our partnership with the World Bank is key to achieving sustainable food security.” The World Bank representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Somaliland’s efforts, highlighting the project’s potential to serve as a model for regional food system resilience.

This development signals a promising advancement for Somaliland’s agricultural sector, with the accelerated SL-FSRP expected to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods across the nation.
