Somaliland Vice President Champions Refugee Support at World Refugee Day Event

The Vice President of Somaliland, H.E. Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, took center stage at a vibrant ceremony held at Mansoor Hotel in Hargeisa to commemorate World Refugee Day. The event, attended by key government officials, United Nations representatives, refugees, and dignitaries, underscored Somaliland’s commitment to supporting displaced communities.

Speaking at the event, Vice President Abdi emphasized the importance of empathy and inclusion for refugees, stating, “Circumstances force people to become refugees, and it’s our duty as hosts to welcome them warmly, regardless of gender.” He outlined the government’s plans to enhance refugee welfare, including a proposal to establish designated settlements to better serve their needs.

The Minister of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Saleban Du’ale Jama, also addressed the gathering, reaffirming the government’s responsibility to care for refugees while urging them to respect Somaliland’s laws and cultural values. “We are committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of those seeking refuge in our country,” he said.

The event highlighted Somaliland’s ongoing collaboration with UN agencies to address refugee challenges. Vice President Abdi welcomed suggestions from humanitarian partners and called for innovative solutions to improve living conditions for displaced persons.
