The Director General of Somaliland’s Ministry of Agriculture, Eng. Abdirizak Gaas, led a high-level delegation on a working visit to the Sanaag region on 21st June, 2025, conducting inspections of farmlands in several key areas. The delegation, which included Ibrahim Omar, Director of the Planning Department, and officials from the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF), focused on assessing the state of agriculture and engaging directly with local farmers.
The team visited farming communities in Xidh-Xidh, Xareed, Gaacidh, and Shumux-shumux, where they were joined by regional officials, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment coordinators for Sanaag, as well as MP Khadar Ali Hakiim. During the tour, the delegation met with farmers to discuss critical issues such as crop production, water availability, pest control, and the types of crops cultivated in the region.
Eng. Gaas emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to supporting farmers, stating, “Our visit aims to understand the challenges and needs of our farmers firsthand. We are ready to provide technical knowledge, pest management solutions, and equipment to boost productivity.” Farmers shared detailed reports on their efforts and challenges, expressing optimism about potential government support.
The inspection, which lasted several hours, concluded with the delegation’s return to Erigavo, the regional capital. This visit is part of a broader nationwide tour by the Director General to evaluate and strengthen agricultural development across Somaliland.
The Ministry’s proactive engagement signals a renewed focus on empowering farmers and enhancing food security in the region.
