Somaliland Justice Minister Meets SIDA Officials in Sweden to Boost Development Cooperation

The Minister of Justice of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Yoonis Axmed Yoonis, held a productive meeting with senior officials from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) during his ongoing working visit to Sweden. The discussions, held in Stockholm, focused on strengthening bilateral ties and advancing cooperation in key areas such as justice, judiciary systems, and prison reforms.

Accompanied by Somaliland’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon.  Axmed Yaasiin Maxamed, and Somaliland’s Ambassador to Sweden, Hon. Sakariye Xasan Wacays, Minister Yoonis engaged with Mr. Anders Ronquist, SIDA’s Head of Africa Division. The meeting underscored Somaliland’s commitment to fostering international partnerships to support its development agenda.

Both sides explored opportunities for collaborative projects aimed at enhancing Somaliland’s judicial and correctional frameworks. A significant outcome of the talks was an agreement for SIDA’s Director-General to visit Somaliland in the near future, with the goal of deepening ties and launching impactful development initiatives. Minister Yoonis emphasized Somaliland’s open-door policy and enthusiasm for working closely with SIDA to drive progress in critical sectors.

“Somaliland is eager to strengthen its partnership with Sweden through SIDA’s expertise in development cooperation. This collaboration will play a pivotal role in advancing our justice system and fostering sustainable growth,” said Minister Yoonis.

The meeting marks a significant step in Somaliland’s efforts to secure international support for its development priorities, reinforcing its position as a stable and forward-looking partner in the Horn of Africa.
