Somaliland Delegation Meets Swedish Parliament Speaker to Strengthen Ties and Push for EU Recognition

A high-level Somaliland delegation, led by Justice Minister Yoonis Axmed Yoonis and Youth and Sports Minister Axmed Yasin Mohamed, held a productive meeting with the second Deputy and acting Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Ms. Julia Kronlid, during a working visit to Sweden.

The discussions focused on deepening the longstanding bilateral relationship between Somaliland and Sweden, with an emphasis on cooperation in justice, prison reform, human rights, youth development, and sports.

The meeting marked a significant step in fostering closer ties between the two nations. Both sides expressed a commitment to advancing mutual interests, with Somaliland seeking to showcase its progress in governance and statehood. A key outcome of the talks was an agreement for Swedish parliamentarians to visit Somaliland to observe its democratic institutions and realities on the ground firsthand.

The delegation also urged Sweden to advocate for Somaliland’s recognition within the European Union, highlighting the country’s stability and democratic achievements. This visit is seen as a pivotal moment in Somaliland’s ongoing efforts to gain international recognition and strengthen its global partnerships.

Hon. Sakariye Hassan Wa’ays, the Somaliland representative in Sweden, who participated in the delegation’s meeting with the parliament, welcomed the delegation in Stockholm.
