The Ministry of Education and Science of Somaliland, in collaboration with Windle Trust International (WTI), has announced the opening of applications for the prestigious James Aryam Scholarships. This program offers Somaliland residents a unique opportunity to pursue fully funded postgraduate studies in Uganda starting in 2025.
The James Aryam Scholarships, named in honor of a former Windle International Uganda Executive Director who passed away in 2021, aim to empower students from conflict-affected regions in East Africa, including Somaliland, Sudan, and South Sudan. The scholarships target candidates pursuing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, with a special focus on fostering leadership and academic excellence. Windle Trust International, known for supporting education will cover tuition fees, monthly stipends, and relocation costs for selected students.
Eligibility and Application Details
To qualify, applicants must be residents of Somaliland, hold at least a second-class upper degree (or its equivalent), and demonstrate English proficiency through an approved language test. Candidates must also commit to returning to Somaliland within one month of completing their studies. The program prioritizes gender equity, aiming for at least 50% female participation to address educational disparities in the region.
Applications for the 2025 cohort are open from June 9 to July 9, 2025, and must be submitted online via the Windle Trust International portal. The program will support studies at leading Ugandan universities, such as Makerere University, for a duration of two years.
