The Somaliland Strategic Advisory Group (SL-SAG) unequivocally rejected the recent assertions made by the Somali government concerning Somaliland’s democratic electoral processes. It should be emphasized: Somaliland’s quest for independence was not merely a favor granted, but rather a hard-fought triumph, achieved through the blood and sacrifices of our citizens who liberated themselves from the oppressive regime of their ruthless dictator Siyad Barre of Somalia. Since the declaration of independence in 1991, we have diligently constructed a peaceful and democratic society in which power is vested in the populace. In Somaliland, we have conducted numerous free and fair elections; this serves as a testament to our steadfast commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law. Our citizens exercise their right to elect their leaders without interference, thereby ensuring a government that genuinely embodies the collective will of the people. Somaliland has effectively managed its own affairs with remarkable stability and prosperity, however, this has occurred despite the lack of international recognition.
In the interim, Somalia’s federal government (despite its assertions regarding Somaliland) remains largely ineffective in governing beyond a constrained area in Mogadishu. It continues to depend on the presence of approximately 30,000 foreign troops, primarily to uphold a tenuous peace. The Somali government has designated separatism as a national security threat; however, it is crucial to clarify this: Somaliland’s existence does not pose a threat but rather represents a reality that emerged from the pursuit of freedom, dignity and self-determination. Our populace made the conscious choice to extricate itself from tyranny, subsequently establishing a nation grounded in justice, democracy and peace. It is indeed ironic that a government unable to secure its own capital would question the legitimacy of our democratic processes.
Somaliland’s elections serve as a testament to our strength and unity, embodying our people’s determination. We transition power peacefully, electing leaders through the ballot rather than resorting to violence. Although Somalia remains entangled in conflict and division, Somaliland has evolved into a symbol of stability within the Horn of Africa.
Somalia’s criticisms merely underscore its own vulnerabilities and failure to provide effective governance. Instead of attempting to undermine Somaliland’s accomplishments, the Somali government ought to prioritize resolving its internal issues, addressing the persistent conflicts and constructing a state that genuinely serves its citizens.
SL-SAG remains steadfast in its support of the aspirations of the Somaliland populace. We have rightfully earned our sovereignty and will persist in defending our right to self-determination. The global community must recognize the reality of Somaliland as a nation founded on the tenets of freedom, democracy and peace. We will not be silenced or influenced by those who aim to strip us of our rightful position in the international arena.
Somaliland’s journey has been characterized by resilience and triumph; however, it is time for the world to acknowledge our successes and honor our sovereignty.
Although challenges remain, we will continue to uphold democratic values and remain resolute in our pursuit of international recognition.
May Allah continue to protect and bless Somaliland!
